Organic strawberries better pollinated

Organic cultivation methods not only benefit biodiversity; they also appear to have a positive effect on the ecosystem service pollination. In a study of strawberry plants in Skåne, the proportion of fully pollinated flowers was significantly higher on organic farms. This is shown in new research from Lund University in Sweden.

The study is based on studies of strawberry plants on twelve farms in the county of Skåne, Sweden. On the farms with 'KRAV' organic certification, where neither pesticides nor non-organic fertiliser are used, 45 per cent of the strawberry flowers were fully pollinated. On the conventional farms, the corresponding figure was 17 per cent.

"The results show that the pollination service is benefited by organic cultivation methods, which is an important factor in the development of sustainable agriculture", says Georg Andersson, a doctoral student in environmental science at Lund University.

The research also shows that the positive effects of organic cultivation are evident within 2-4 years of the farm receiving KRAV certification.

The research results have been published in the scientific journal PLoS ONE. [read more]

Please help our organization

Dear Friend of COG,

Today, we urgently ask for your generous financial support.

The Canadian Organic Growers is in a very challenging financial situation. In the last two years, the grant and project funds that were available to COG (and other environmental groups) have dwindled to next to nothing.

As President of COG, I can assure you that our board and staff are working very hard to re-organize and reduce expenses, as well as to find new sources of revenue, but we need immediate assistance.

COG must raise $65,000 to see us through this funding crunch.

As a friend, we are asking you to donate as much as you can. In return, you will receive a tax receipt, as well as the assurance that your donation will be focused on saving our organization and publications. This is not a general appeal, but a matter of urgency and true need.

Since 1975, COG has been the voice of organics in Canada. Our work includes the COG magazine, books, lending library, consumer and grower conferences and workshops, Growing Up Organic projects, Organic Week, and our work against GMOs.

Without a doubt, COG’s information and services are essential to tens of thousands of people. In fact, 90,000 unique visitors used our COG website last year to find information on organic growing and food–we need COG! There is no other organization that can do what COG does.

Our news may come as a surprise to you, and perhaps we waited too long to share it, but we have been trying to find other solutions to our financial difficulties before sounding the alarm bells. Our board has put in hundreds of volunteer hours to work on these issues–and progress has been made.

Just in the last four weeks, COG has received two new grants and we’ve applied for others (albeit small ones), we’re also very excited about our special partnership with the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada for this summer’s COG magazine. COG also has lots of great new initiatives planned (like work on our lending library, so more growers can benefit from our resources) to further build the organic movement at the national and local levels, but we can’t do any of it without you.

We truly believe that if enough people donate to COG in the next two months, that our organization can move forward and into a much stronger position. If you can donate $10, $100 or even $1000, we promise you that every dollar will make a real difference in COG’s future.

Sometimes it takes a crisis to move forward, challenge the status quo, and really understand what is important–what is clear to our board, staff and volunteers is how much COG is needed today. We need to stand up for organics more than ever, and a strong grassroots voice is critical to do so.

Please don’t delay in sending in your tax-deductible donation. If you love organics, believe in a green future, and want to ensure that COG remains a strong voice–please donate today!

Every dollar counts–Every donation is appreciated.

Thank you so much,

Daniel Brisebois,
Canadian Organic Growers President and Organic Farmer

PS–Please try to send your donation in by May 30th to help COG through the summer, when donations and subscription sales are at their lowest levels.

PPS–If you are on Facebook, please connect with our Spring Into Action campaign and share with your friends and family. We know there are thousands of Canadians who would support COG, but just need to be asked.

Ottawa's First-Ever Food Action Plan to Address Health, Poverty and the Environment

A food plan for Ottawa is needed to better promote health and environmental sustainability and to address poverty and inequality, according to a draft Food Action Plan released today by Food for All, a project led by Just Food and researchers at the University of Ottawa.

"Ottawa's first-ever Food Action Plan outlines actions that we can take to work towards healthy food for all in Ottawa," says Erin Krekoski, Food for All Coordinator. "The plan includes draft recommendations for community gardening, breastfeeding, edible landscaping in city parks, healthy foods in schools and corner stores, and action against hunger and poverty."

In 2006, 14% of Ottawa residents lived below the low-income cut-off rate, but in many neighbourhoods, this figure is over 20%. Food bank usage increased 7.8% between 2008 and 2009 and, in some neighbourhoods today, residents have very poor access to healthy foods. Food issues affect everybody: obesity, poor nutrition, the loss of food-related skills like gardening and cooking and the loss of agricultural lands to development all point to the need to take action on food.

The Food Action Plan points to 14 key areas where businesses, community organizations, the NCC, school boards, individuals and the City of Ottawa can take action to address food-related concerns, and identifies other areas for further research and consultation. A Food Action Plan for Ottawa focuses on:

  • A Breastfeeding-Friendly Ottawa
  • Healthy School Food Environments
  • Access to Food: Planning and Zoning
  • OC Transpo and Food Access
  • Income and the Cost of Eating
  • Community Programming for Food Security, Food Education and Awareness
  • Healthy Corner Stores
  • Community Gardening on Private and Public Lands
  • Community Gardening and Urban Agriculture on NCC Lands
  • Prevention, Identification and Remediation of Soil Contamination
  • Edible Landscapes
  • Hens in Urban Areas
  • Bees in Urban Areas
  • A Food Policy Council for Ottawa

The Food Action Plan, based on more than two years of research and discussion, and developed and written by over 300 community members, is in its draft stage. An online consultation and community-based Kitchen Table Talks that allow for group discussion on these topics are taking place until April 22nd. These are an opportunity to comment and help shape the final report, and to play a role in the implementation of the Action Plan.

"This Food Action Plan affects so many sectors in Ottawa that everyone should be interested. It affects anyone who eats," says Dr. Elizabeth Kristjansson, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Ottawa and Principal Investigator for Food for All. "The draft Food Action Plan is evidence-based, and the final plan will reflect the ideas and concerns of Ottawa residents. We encourage everyone to join the Kitchen Table Talks."

A Food Action Plan for Ottawa: A Community Vision is available on the Just Food web site at www.justfood.ca/foodforall. Comments on the draft plan can be made on-line at www.justfood.ca/survey/ and a listing of community Kitchen Table talks can be found at www.justfood.ca/foodforall/food-action-plan/.

Food for All is led by Just Food and researchers from the University of Ottawa, with funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The Food for All Steering Committee includes academics from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, Just Food, Centretown Community Health Centre, Ottawa Public Health, the Ottawa Food Bank, Sandy Hill Community Health Centre, and the City of Ottawa.

BRIDGEHEAD'S GROWING UP ORGANIC SPECIAL BLEND AVAILABLE NOW

For the third year in a row, Bridgehead is running their delicious Spring mix Growing Up Organic blend. ECO FARM DAY 2011 - FOR THE SAKE OF FOOD SAFETY AND SECURITY

Eastern Ontario's Premier Farm Conference.

The theme of Eco Farm Day 2011 is 'For the Sake of Food Safety and Security'. The safety and security of food supply is in deep trouble throughout the world. Chronic and acute food-borne diseases emanate from the industrial production of food, involving longer than normal storage and delivery to consumers as highly processed and boxed eatables. The wide use of pesticides, antibiotics, hormones, slaughterhouse wastes, and GMOs poses a phenomenal risk. The most obvious answer to this dilemma is to grow and consume organically produced food, but the market faces such demand to which it is unable to cater. The outsourcing of organic cultivation to far flung places and even certain deserts across the globe is neither tenable nor acceptable. The only alternative is to produce and consume local organic foods. Strategies will be discussed on how to resolve these issues in the best interests of the public.

This message will be delivered through keynote speakers Dr. Shiv Chopra and author Margaret Webb, 12 workshops, a trade show with over 30 exhibitors, and a fully organic lunch.

Date: February 25, 26th, 2011, Ramada Inn, Cornwall, Ontario
