Project Update February 27, 2008
Just passing our first year mark, Growing Up Organic Manitoba now has 11 locations snacking and/or lunching on local organic fare.
Our November 22 fundraising event, Loco for Local!, was a huge success and a fantastic shindig celebrating all things local. Guests were treated to local organic edibles prepared by the Yummy Mummies while a great night of local talent unfolded. Click here to see some shots from Loco for Local!
Shortly after Loco for Local!, GUO national launched our 2008 calendar featuring GUO Manitoba and Ontario through beautiful photos and write-ups capturing a glimpse of each program. Here in Manitoba, we have only a few copies left.
Adding on to our previous tours to Wiens Shared Farm and York the Hotel, a group of children and staff from Day Nursery Day Care Centre were invited into the world of bread-making at Tall Grass Prairie Bakery. Part-owner, Tabitha Langel, helped bridge the gap between farmer and consumer, between grain and bread, “getting them to make dough animals; getting them to feel the process. I start with the kernels, then have them hold their hands under the mill as flour falls like a soft, dry rain through their fingers.” Click here for a shot fo the tour.
The first meeting of the GUO Steering Committee was on February 13.
GUO was proud to present at the sold out Getting Vocal, Growing Local conference that took place on March 7 and 8. We presented a joint workshop about healthy lunch options and how to get the childcare centre of any little people in workshop participant’s lives involved in the program.
Project Update September 25, 2007
GUO Manitoba is currently serving 8 facilities. With a focus on local when possible, 5 childcare centres, an art program, a school and a family centre are committed to the project.
This past summer OFCM Manitoba hosted a farm tour for GUO participants at the Wiens Shared Farm near St. Adolphe. While munching on veggies, the group of 50 plus children, moms and staff of Taking Care Childcare and Taking Charge program toured the farm. A second summer tour featured a group of children and staff from Art City. This visit took place at York the Hotel. Chef Mark Campbell opened his kitchen to an inquisitive gaggle of kids, talked a bit about organic food and assisted the group in a sweet dessert making activity.
Upcoming fall activities for the GUO program in Manitoba include the launch of the OFCM website at the Harvest Moon Festival in Clearwater, Manitoba on September 22nd, 2007. Visit www.organicfoodcouncil.ca for more info. On November 22nd, we are hosting a GUO fundraising event celebrating all that is local and organic. Party with us at the Franco-Manitoba Cultural Center for Loco for Local! The night features local music, food and dance, as well as the launch of the GUO calendar. Later in November, GUO coordinator, Julie Fine will present a workshop about the project at the annual Special Area Group (SAG) conference for Early Childhood Education.
