Update August 18, 2009 - GUO Gets a New Project Manager
COG Ottawa is pleased to announce Torry Reid as our new Growing Up Organic Project Manager as of August 1, 2009. Having been involved with the GUO Project since September 2008 and working closely with former project manager, Lynda Hall, Torry was the logical choice to take over after Lynda's departure. Torry will continue Lynda's groundbreaking work in creating a sustainable organic food distribution system in the Ottawa area with its focus on youth.
Torry graduated from the University of Waterloo in Environment and Resource studies, where she wrote her honours thesis on local, sustainable food networks. With a two-year-old son at home, Growing Up Organic is a natural fit for Torry. She is eager to take on the role of Project Manager and to build upon the momentum that has been put into place by Lynda Hall’s inspirational work.
If you have any questions concerning the project, please do not hesitate to contact Torry at 613.244.4000 x 3 or torry@cog.ca.

Update April 15th, 2009

PRESS RELEASE & MEDIA EVENT
School Food Gardens in Ottawa to be funded by sales of new Bridgehead coffee blend being launched at Earth Day event.
School food gardens being developed by Canadian Organic Growers through its Growing Up Organic project in Ottawa, will soon be benefiting from the sale of a limited edition coffee blend being created by and sold at Bridgehead coffeehouses.
The Growing Up Organic Blend will be launched on Earth Day, Wednesday April 22, 2009. Every pound of coffee sold will generate $2 for the development of school food gardens in neighbourhoods in which there is a Bridgehead location. In addition to financial support, Bridgehead is encouraging its employees to work with schools on garden construction and maintenance.
Schools already planning to take advantage of this partnership include Cambridge Street Community Public School in Centretown, Le Trillium and Trille des bois in Vanier, First Avenue Public School in the Glebe, and Heritage Academy in Hintonburg. It is anticipated that enough funds will be generated through the sale of the Growing Up Organic Blend to build up to 6 school food gardens.
The Growing Up Organic Project Manager in Ottawa, Lynda Hall, applauds Bridgehead’s leadership:
“Bridgehead is actively committing to making Ottawa a greener, healthier place to live and raise children. Building organic food gardens in schools provides a teaching tool that helps deliver the science and nutrition curricula in a meaningful way, while teaching the next generation practical food growing and food preparation skills. This is one step towards building a food culture that will appreciate farming and value wholesome foods that are grown using environmentally sustainable methods.”
Media is invited to the official launch of the Growing Up Organic Blend, at a children’s gardening event being held at the following time and place:
Wednesday April 22nd, 2009 (Earth Day)
8:30am to 11am
Cambridge Street Community Public School
250 Cambridge Street North, Ottawa
Media will be allowed to photograph, film, record and interview grade 3 students as they participate in planting seeds indoors, and exploring soil composition in the outdoor gardens.
Bridgehead owners Gina Becker and Tracey Clarke, and Canadian Organic Growers staff will be assisting the students, and available for pre-arranged interviews.
All media MUST make arrangements with Growing Up Organic Ottawa Project Manager Lynda Hall to attend this media event.
