History

In early 2007, COG launched the Growing Up Organic (GUO) project. The purpose of the project is to shift Canada towards increased organic production by increasing the amount of organically grown food served in Canadian institutions. After learning how other jurisdictions such as  Italy were so successful in rapidly increasing the number of acres under organic management by creating policies and programs around institutional food procurement, we wondered if this approach could work in Canada (read the GUO report).

We set out to test this by initiating a series of pilot projects across Canada. These pilot projects, carried out by COG chapters and affiliates, were designed as a bit of an experiment to help us to figure out what types of strategies could work to support large scale transition to organic production. Our findings and recommendations are summarized in our three year progress report.
