Workshop makes transition to Organic more accessible - Feb 28 & March 20
(Guelph, ON) Canadian Organic Growers (COG) continues to offer support to farmers interested in transitioning to certified organic production. One of the latest in the organization’s programming is a workshop developed specifically to assist farmers wanting to transition a small scale produce operation. The delivery of this workshop and this program is thanks in part to the support of the Agricultural Management Institute (AMI).
The Making the Transition to Small Scale Organic Production workshop has been designed for experienced growers who want to walk through the development of an organic plan in order to certify their farm business. Workshop developer and facilitator, Theresa Schumilas, explains, “While there is a lot to learn on the production side of transitioning to organic, planning and management are equally important when thinking about transitioning your farm. We needed a workshop that demonstrated this reality and helped to prepare farmers for it.” Theresa is the owner and operator of Garden Party, an organic farm and consultancy near Waterloo, Ontario. Garden Party operates a year-round certified organic food hub, which includes a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, buying club and processing kitchen.
The workshop provides participants with a thorough understanding of the transition process, the ins and outs of organic certification, and the aspects of the Canadian Organic Standards that are directly relevant to small scale produce farming.
A joint initiative of COG Perth-Waterloo-Wellington (COG PWW) and COG Ottawa, the workshop will be delivered over two 2-hour sessions via conference call, with some independent work required in-between sessions. This option provides more flexibility and a greater geographic range from which farmers can participate. “The ease of calling in from home eliminates the need for travel, and creates the opportunity to meet like-minded farmers from across the province,” comments Tegan Renner, Outreach Coordinator with COG PWW.
Upon registration, participants will receive toll-free number call-in details and a workbook containing a variety of forms and templates that will help them plan for certification. In addition, the facilitator will be available by phone or email for questions or support with completing workbook activities in-between sessions.
If workshop participants would like more individualized or further support beyond the workshop, they can take advantage of the Transition to Organic Advisor Program. This peer-based advisory service offers farmers across the province free, individualized support through the transition to certification process from specialized advisors in produce, field crops and livestock. More details are available at www.cogwaterloo.ca/growOrganic.php.
For more information, updates, or to register for the workshop, visit the Canadian Organic Growers’ website www.cog.ca/shop and click “Making the Transition to Small Scale Organic Production Workshop” or contact COG PWW’s or COG Ottawa’s respective Farmer Outreach coordinators: Tegan Renner, outreach@cogwaterloo.ca, 226-251-3012 and Colin Lundy, colin@cog.ca, 613-493-0020.

Growing Strawberries Organically (one day workshop) - Feb 11 / March 3rd
Strawberries are known to have high levels of pesticide residues compared to most other crops. There is a strong public demand for organic strawberries, but the supply is very limited. The Growing Strawberries Organically workshop will help farmers tap into this important niche market. A companion to COG’s newly released Practical Skills Handbook Growing Strawberries Organically, this workshop covers important considerations and management strategies to successful organic strawberry production.
The Growing Strawberries Organically workshop is for organic growers wanting to diversify their farm or improve the quality and quantity of their organic strawberries, or conventional growers wanting to explore organic strawberries as an option, or simply to reduce their pesticide usage while still raising quality berries.

Eco Farm Day 2012: Call for Presentations
Eco Farm Day 2012 Sat Feb 25, 2012, Cornwall, ON
Call for Presentations
Eco Farm Day, hosted by Canadian Organic Growers, Ottawa Chapter, is the leading learning and networking conference for organic agriculture and food in Eastern Ontario and beyond.
Last year’s 2011 edition hosted Dr Shiv Chopra and Margaret Webb as our keynote speakers on the theme of Food Safety and Security, with 12 excellent workshops, over 35 exhibitors, a wonderful Friday evening gala, and over 250 participants. The program and presentations of the last 4 years are available online at www.ecofarmday.ca .
The next edition is scheduled for Saturday, February 25th 2012, again in Cornwall, Ontario. The theme of Eco Farm Day 2012 is "Vibrant Businesses in Organic Agriculture and Food".
We are pleased to announce our keynote speakers for 2012. Steve Beauchesne of Beau's All Natural Brewing Co. will describe how his family-run brewery has built a solid brand in an incredibly tough competitive market by firmly sticking to the goals of making organic beer, supporting their community and sustainable business practices. Lucy Sharratt from the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network will discuss how genetic modification poses new urgent threats to the future of organic food in Ontario with the latest information and strategic updates on GM crops and animals.
This is a call for presentations by anyone with a good educational subject or experience to share with organic farmers, processors, businesses, and enthusiasts. There is excellent research happening in organic agriculture and food in Canada. There are also many lessons learned as operators improve their performance. Surely, there must be lots of useful material to present to in our life-long need for ongoing education.
What information can you offer to organic farmers and businesses to help them improve their overall performance? A workshop that you presented elsewhere in past years is still very relevant. It is valuable to recycle some workshops to include new material and to offer it to people who missed it the first time.
Perhaps you know of a presenter or subject. Perhaps you attended an interesting workshop recently that we need to know about. Please send us the referral.
A donation of speaking time to COG Ottawa is most appreciated. Otherwise, Eco Farm Day offers a speaker’s fee of $200 for each workshop. This can be paid cash or exchanged for an exhibit space for your business or institution. As many speakers are fairly local, Eco Farm Day does not normally pay for traveling; however, opportunities exist to fund distant speakers of particular interest to our audience.
Please pass this invitation along to your contacts.
Please send your referral or your own contact information and an abstract to myself at this address.
Thank you.

INTRODUCTION TO GROWING UP ORGANIC
After running workshops in school food gardens for the past four years, Growing Up Organic has finally written them down and we're ready to share them with the greater community.
Many of these workshops don't require a school food garden and can be run using container gardening or as one off workshops to animate school curriculum in a new and dynamic way for students. Please share and circulate the workshops to anyone that you think might be interested in our programming - the more kids that have access to organic foods in schools the better!
Workshop Material is available here. (pdf)
If you have further questions regarding these workshops or are interested in Growing Up Organic programming please contact Torry Reid at torry@cog.ca or 613-627-6343.

ECO FARM DAY 2011 - FOR THE SAKE OF FOOD SAFETY AND SECURITY
Eastern Ontario's Premier Farm Conference.
The theme of Eco Farm Day 2011 is 'For the Sake of Food Safety and Security'. The safety and security of food supply is in deep trouble throughout the world. Chronic and acute food-borne diseases emanate from the industrial production of food, involving longer than normal storage and delivery to consumers as highly processed and boxed eatables. The wide use of pesticides, antibiotics, hormones, slaughterhouse wastes, and GMOs poses a phenomenal risk. The most obvious answer to this dilemma is to grow and consume organically produced food, but the market faces such demand to which it is unable to cater. The outsourcing of organic cultivation to far flung places and even certain deserts across the globe is neither tenable nor acceptable. The only alternative is to produce and consume local organic foods. Strategies will be discussed on how to resolve these issues in the best interests of the public.
This message will be delivered through keynote speakers Dr. Shiv Chopra and author Margaret Webb, 12 workshops, a trade show with over 30 exhibitors, and a fully organic lunch.
Date: February 25, 26th, 2011, Ramada Inn, Cornwall, Ontario
