Activities
The Kawartha chapter operates out of the offices of Peterborough Green-Up at 360 George St. N., Peterborough, ON. Members of our chapter support the activities and work at Peterborough Green-Up's Ecology Park. Our chapter has helped to design and maintain the Food Garden and the Yard of Plenty at the Ecology Park. There is a close relationship between Peterborough Green-Up and the Kawartha Chapter of COG and every effort is made to share information and avoid duplication.
Workshops and Seminars
Workshops are held at the Ecology Park throughout the summer months and winter workshops are held at the Green-Up office. Follow the link to Peterborough Green-Up to find a listing of workshops as they are scheduled.
Resource Centre
COG members can drop by the office at 360 George St. N., in Peterborough and sign out books from the library. This library is co-sponsored between Peterborough Green-Up and COG Kawartha. Books in to the Kawartha chapter's library include: John Jeavons' How to Grow More Vegetables and The Complete Manual of Organic Gardening by Basil Chapman, Editor of Organic Gardening. The library is combined with the Ecology Park's library and is available to members of both groups. Also available is the listing of books available from the COG national library for those who are interested.
Factsheets
Work continues on the "Facts on Foods" Factsheets sponsored by the Friends of the Environment Foundation (Canada Trust). The "Facts on Foods" Factsheets cover information to help gardeners grow their own food organically. They offer tips on natural pest control, cultivation and care as well as interesting recipes made from local produce. Currently available are factsheets on the following topics:
- Root crops
- Leaf crops
- Sprouts
- Legumes
- Tomatoes
- Berries
- Grains
Local Organic Growers
Also in development is a listing of organic growers in our area. We'd like to help growers and "consumers" make better links. A number of restaurants in the area are especially interested in making these links and offering local organic foods on their menus.
Volunteers
Volunteers are always needed. Currently help is needed getting the "Facts on Foods" Factsheets online, developing and distributing a newsletter and in the spring and summer we will need help at the Ecology Park. Please contact Brenda Coons at greenup@kawartha.net if you would like to help out in some way. Thank you.
